Cloth. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. A good to very good copy of the 1st edition of this collection of ghost stories by A N L Munby. Munby wrote the stories when he was in a prisoner of war camp in Bavaria. Outside of his wartime experience he was a devoted lover of books - working in the book trade and writing about books. He was the Librarian of Kings College, Cambridge, for 27 years. The black cloth binding has silver titles to the spine. It is very clean with slight scuffing to the surface. The spine is cocked to the front and there is light pulling to the spine ends. Corners are slightly rubbed and are turned inwards.The contents are complete and very clean. The dust jacket, designed by Joanna Dowling, is unclipped and priced at 8s 6d net on the front flap. A large section including titles is missing from the top of the spine and there is a very small area of loss to the bottom. There is some archive tape reinforcement and repair to the inside of the spine and a couple of edges. There is general nibbling and tearing along the edges with loss at the fold ends. Munby's only collection of ghost stories is an important contribution to the genre, perhaps only surpassed by the work of M.R. James (to whom the work bears a printed dedication in homage). The stories were written whilst in a German prison-camp during the Second World War.…
