Marbled paper to boards and marbled ep's and page edges. It is not clear whether this is a stand alone volume or part of 2 volumes. The Abbot is a sequel to THE MONASTERY. The volume starts at Chapter 1. but most volumes in this long series have an introduction to the first volume. Volume 22 is Kenilworth and not a second volume. Frontis piece and title vignette. Seven volumes of the 1890 release of the Waverly Novels - Bound in contemporary grey-blue half-calf with intricate gilt decorartions. marbled paper boards, marbled endpapers, marbled edges. All with spines missing, bottom edges have signs of wear. With frontispieces and vignette titles. Novel titles are: Woodstock: The Fair Maid of Perth: Kenilworth: The Monastery: The Abbot: Count Robert of Paris: The Betrothed. All have bookplates on front pastedowns (Philpot Brookes). Engraved armorial bookplate "Walsh" on front pastedown of each volume. Volume 2 lacking the title page and half title, else a very good set with rubbing and wear to the edges of the boards and corners.

Condition: Very Good. FIRST EDITION. 3 vols, with the half-titles and final blank following ads in volume 3. Bound in the publishers original pale blue/gray boards, spines chipped, printed paper spine labels largely present, hinges cracked on volume 3, internally clean and bright, still a GOOD copy.

First edition. 8vo, in full contemporary calf, the boards framed in gilt, the spines with gilt ruled flat bands, gilt numbered in one compartment, red morocco gilt lettered labels in another. iv, 348; 351; 367 pp. A handsome set in contemporary calf, the text quite fresh and clean, the block solid and quite fine, the antique calf with some minor wear at the edges, the spines a bit mellowed, two volumes with very minor chipping at the heads, one volume with a bit of restoration to the spine panel, hinges with a little wear to the leather but all holding fine. AN ATTRACTIVE FIRST EDITION, this is one of Scott's popular tales from Benedictine sources. It is set in the time of Mary, Queen of Scots, and follows the fortunes of characters we first met in "The Monastery", as well as some new characters introduced here.

First American Edition. Two volumes; in the publisher's paper covered boards; edges untrimmed; spine labels perished; stained and mended; a good set. Issued anonymously (by the author of Waverley and Ivanhoe), this is a scarce edition, especially in the original binding. Each volume has the book label of 'George Peabody of Salem,' and one volume has his name in ink on the front free endpaper, although the hand is unidentified. This is possibly, but not likely, the famous George Peabody, a successful businessman and philanthropist. While he was from Danvers (at an earlier time, part of Salem), and a nearby town was named for him, most of his life was spent in England. All books described as first editions are first printings unless otherwise noted.
