Frei Paul Otto (1925-2015) was a German architect and structural engineer noted for his use of lightweight structures, in particular tensile and membrane structures. His first major international project was his design for the West German pavilion at the 1967 world's fair in Montreal (Expo 67). With the construction of the stadium for the Munich Olympic games in 1972 Otto Frei became the great master of tensile structures. Otto was the recipient of numerous awards, including the Grand Prize of the German Association of Architects and Engineers, Berlin (1996), the Royal Gold Medal of the Royal Institute of British Architects (2005), and the Pritzker Prize (2015).

The dust jackets are both complete with light edgewear, the jacket for volume 2 spine top a bit chipped, jackets very good overall. Both jackets in clear mylar covers. This work was originally published in German in 1962 and 1966 under the title " Zugbeanspruchte Konstruktionen". This MIT Press edition was published in 1967 and 1969. Both volumes profusely illustrated in black & white, with photos of models and actual structures, plus much technical information in the form of equations and graphs. Large 4tos, 11" high X 8.5" wide, 320 pages & 171 pages. A very nice hardcover copy of the first American edition in jackets with only light wear. Large heavy books, foreign shipping will be extra.
