In a letter to the New York Review of Books regarding Paul Auster's review of this book, the author described the book as "this product of lifelong studying how to speak so that one speaks, of what is for being spoken, that which most waits on being spoken." A shorter earlier version which appeared in Chelsea magazine in 1967.
