The book.showcases significant typeface designs produced during Morison's tenure at the Lanston Monotype Corporation for their hot-metal typesetting machines during the 1920s and 1930s The 17 chapters are all set in a different typeface; with 6 wood engravings by Reynolds Stone.

One of 450 copies, printed at Christmas for presentation by the University Printer, Brooke Crutchley, to his friends in printing and publishing, and with his preface and post script. Pp. vii [1] 101 [3]. Large 8vo., original russet cloth, lettered in gilt to spine. Spine very slightly faded, some minor wear to head of spine, owner inscription to front pastedown, a good copy, lacking slipcase. With the prospectus for the 1973 collector's edition loosely inserted. Morison's fascinating account of 17 typefaces, and why they were cut at his instigation and under his supervision by the Monotype Corporation between 1922 and 1932. From the library of Robert L. Leslie, American doctor, graphic designer and typologist, with his bookplate to front pastedown.
