Photocopy of a PhD thesis that draws on the Szeyap (Siyi) dialect of Cantonese to reconstruct ancient Proto-Cantonese (Proto Yue) language, which was the ancestor of modern spoken Cantonese of Guangdong Province and Hong Kong. Szeyap/Siyi actually includes a small number of related dialects (including the best known, Taishanese) which have their origin in an area to the southwest of the Pearl River delta. While both Siyi dialect and standard Cantonese are branches of the same linguistic family, they are very mutually intelligible. The author, W. John McCoy Jr. (1924-2007) was a decorated war hero, linguist, educator and businessman who was deeply engaged with China in one capacity or another for his entire career. 320 pp., punch-hole bound in soft wrappers. Size: 29 x 23 cm.
