hardcover. Condition: Good. Fourth Revised Edition. Geography textbook, fourth revised edition has very worn boards, corners worn round, print hard to read, chips and tears, leather spine torn on front edge, while quite worn the text is still bright, rear top corner is cut off. Pen names and notes front and rear endpapers. 1852 copyright, 1855 printing. Doesn't include the Atlas, lots of woodcut illustrations, foxed occasional pencil notes, dogeared pages. 336 pages. First published in the 1840s, the work broke the world into five distinct grand divisions and featured an accompanying atlas of maps used to teach youth about global empires, kingdoms, and states. All orders packed with care, most dust jackets protected by Brodart sleeve, independent bookseller since 2011.

Hardcover. Condition: Fair. 16 colored maps, 100 engravs (illustrator). Fourth, Revised Edition. Duodecimo, 336 pages, printed boards, quarter leather spine perished, leaf 255/256 is torn; leaf 133/134 lacks a large chunk, top cover detached. " The geographies written by Mitchell apparently had the widest circulation of any appearing in the United States before 1900. . Of these seven different books the SYSTEM apparently was the most popular, . The first 50 pages were like a catechism of questions in fine print. These were questions about the maps in the ATLAS. The remainder of the book was descriptive geography about the different countries of the world, with questions at the end of each section . and included many small pictures." - NIetz, OLD TEXTBOOKS, pp. 229-230. Section 64 is devoted to Russian America, with a wood engraving of a "Subterranean Mansion of the Aleutian Islanders". Section 121, Illinois, has an engraving of "Illinois College". Section 120, Indiana, has an engraving of the "Battle of Tippecanoe". Section 126, California, features an engraving of San Francisco. Lead is found in greater quantity in Wisconsin than in any other part of the U.S. Its entry has an engraving of lead mining.
