A rare provincially pr…inted manual of cavalry and foot platoon training with an emphasis on swordsmanship and movement for cavalrymen and rifle training for infantry. Amongst others, section headings include the six cuts, the guards, the point, drawing, sloping and returning swords, attack and defence in line, pursuit and various movements as a body of cavalry. The text continues with a long section on training infantry at the platoon level with section headings that include movements, firing in three ranks, carrying, priming, loading and firing the rifle, firing whilst advancing or retiring and pike exercises. A rare survivor with Worldcat locating only one copy, held at the University of Chicago and COPAC locating a second held by University of Oxford Libraries. Bound in the original publisher's boards, professionally rebacked in stout paper and with a printed paper label on the spine. All edges uncut and partially unopened. Minor wear and markings to the covers. Otherwise, a very clean copy with the text block sound and the binding in good condition. Further photographs available on request.
