Das Millionenspiel ist die erste von drei Verfilmungen, die mehr oder weniger direkt auf Robert Sheckleys Kurzgeschichte "Der Tod spielt mit" basieren. - Robert Sheckley wurde am 16. Juli 1928 in Brooklyn, New York geboren und wuchs in New Jersey auf. Bis 1948 diente er in der US Armee in Korea. Danach studierte er Englisch, Psychologie und Philosophie an der Universität von New York. In den 70er Jahren lebte Robert Sheckley auf Ibiza und in London, um dann nach New York zurückzukehren und beim OMNI Magazin als SF-Redakteur zu arbeiten. Zur Zeit lebt der Schriftsteller mit seiner Frau, der Schriftstellerin Gail Dana, in Portland, Oregon und schreibt, und schreibt, und schreibt. "It's a high, this writing thing, a kind of drug, and once you experience it nothing else is ever the same. Ordinary life seems like a prison sentence in comparison to the freedom of writing." Robert Sheckley 1951 begann er seine ersten Science Fiction Stories an einschlägige Magazine zu verkaufen, mehrere Hundert Kurzgeschichten und einige Dutzend Bücher sollten folgen. Unter anderem schrieb er auch 15 Episoden für die TV-Serie Captain Video und 60 seiner Kurzgeschichten wurden von dem Schauspieler Basil Rathbone für Monitor Radio vorgelesen. Seine Bandbreite geht vom Science Fiction über Fantasy bis hin zu Kriminalgeschichten. Er schrieb auch einige Bücher zu Filmen (Alien) und TV-Serien (Star Trek, Babylon 5) und sein Debut-Roman Immortality, Inc (1958), wurde später unter dem Titel Freejack mit Mick Jagger, Renee Russo und Emilio Esteban verfilmt. Sheckleys Geschichten stecken voller Überraschungen und humorvollen Wendungen, vielleicht einer der Gründe weswegen er desöfteren mit Roger Zelazny zusammengearbeitet hat. Drei humoristische Fantasy-Romane gehen auf das Konto der beiden Altmeister. Robert Sheckley ist am 9. Dezember 2005, im Alter von 77 Jahren in New York gestorben.
