Paperback. Condition: Good. THERE ARE NO TARIFFS OR CUSTOMS DUTIES ON BOOKS. A London detective investigates after a fictional character seems to come to life to harass his creator in this classic British mystery, reprinted here in a handsome paperback edition.Richard Eliot began writing crime novels to fund his son's education.… The protagonist, known as "the Spider," started off as a notorious criminal and later transformed into a private investigator. Now, after thirty-eight entries in the series, Eliot is considering putting the Spider to bed. Someone else, however, has a different idea. At first, Eliot's manuscripts are rewriting themselves overnight. Then neighbors are burglarized, sinister messages appear, and soon someone is recreating storylines that the author never shared with anyone. With the situation reaching a fever pitch, Eliot calls upon Insp. John Appleby to investigate. Now Scotland Yard's best must determine who is the mastermind behind this puzzling plot before the Spider strikes again.Originally published under the title The Spider Strikes. "For careful, dignified and at the same time unfailingly witty writing it would be hard to beat and the characterization. is admirable." -The Times Literary Supplement "An erudite and curious novel. not to be missed by connoisseurs." -The Times (London).

Hardback. Condition: Very Good. Second Impression. 1939. Second impression. 480pp. Michael Innes was the pseudonym of John Innes Mackintosh Stewart (1906-1994), a Scottish novelist and academic. He is probably best known for his crime novels featuring the detective Sir John Appleby. Stop Press is the fourth in his Appleby series…, and was issued in America under the alternative title The Spider Strikes. In the novel, gentleman writer Richard Eliot's popular fictional character 'The Spider' seems to have come to life, performing a series of crimes and practical jokes apparently drawn from the author's subconscious. It seems probable that somebody wishes to drive him out of his mind and prevent the publication of his next novel, the thirty eighth in the series, by making him cry "stop press" to his publisher. The book is bound in the original black cloth covered boards with red titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling and light staining to the boards, including a circular glass mark on the rear board. The bottom front corner and the spine ends are bumped. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription.

Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. First Edition. First UK Edition. Publisher's black boards with red lettering to the spine. A faint crease to the front board possibly caused by a production fault) otherwise a near fine copy with no inscriptions and foxing to the text block. In the RARE dustwrapper priced 8/6 net to the spine (as called…for). The dustwrapper is VG indeed and is rubbed to the spine edges and has a slither of loss at the base of the spine. There are several, small, minor edge tears which have been neatly repaired on the verso with archival tape. The spine is slightly darkened (a common fault with Gollancz yellow dustwrappers of this period). The first edition is distinctly uncommon in dustwrapper. Looks very nice in its shiny Brodart-style protector. Appleby # 4. A country-house mystery. Photographs/scans available upon request.
