Cover photograph by Aerofilms Ltd. keywords: Stonehenge Archaeology Pelican. DESCRIPTION - During recent years notable advances have been made in British prehistoric archaeology, and in particular the understanding of Stonehenge itself has been much enlarged by excavations carried out since 1950 This book presents to the ordinary reader the results of research, reinterprets the findings of earlier excavators, and gives a comprehensive account of the monument and its significance within the wider framework of British prehistory. Each of the five sections into which the book is divided deals with a single aspect of the monument. The first describes the various structures, including those no longer visible on the surfaced, with the help of detailed plans and numerous photographs, many of them illustrating points of construction never previously recorded. The second gives the evidence for the sequence of building and the dates of the various phases; and the third discusses the techniques used for transporting, tooling, and erecting the stones. The fourth section surveys what is known of the various prehistoric communities which contributed to the buildings of Stonehenge; and the fifth, necessarily more speculative, attempts to interpret the monument in terms of changing religious beliefs and of social and political organization. An additional chapter summarizes the history of research and speculation on Stonehenge and its relation to the development of antiquarian thought in Britain, and the author has added a section on the most recent investigations of the site in 1956/7. inventory #36708.
