First Edition
First Edition. Signed and inscribed by U.S. Representative from New York (March 4, 1853 Ð March 3, 1855), William M. Tweed, popularly known as ÔBoss TweedÕ: ÒChas E. Wilbour Esq. with regards of W. M. Tweed Feb. 1868Ó. Bound in full dark blue leather with decorative gold design, gilt-stamping to the spine, and gilt edges, marble endpapers, Illustrated. 144 pages. Thin split to the front hinge, else about fine with some very minor edge wear. Enclosed in a custom dark blue clamshell box with a gilt-stamped leather label to the spine and dark blue velvet lining. William Marcy Tweed (1823 - 1878) was an American politician and legislator best known for his leadership of Tammany Hall, the primary Democratic Party force to be reckoned with in 19th century New York. TweedÕs power and status revolved around his being the third-largest landowner in New York City, a director of the Erie Railway, the Tenth National Bank, and the New York Printing Company, as well as owner of the glamorous Metropolitan Hotel. He was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1852, the New York City Board of Advisors in 1856, and the New York State Senate in 1867. His downfall came in the form of a major scandal when he was convicted of stealing between $40 million and $200 million from New York City taxpayers through political corruption. Charles Edwin Wilbour (1833 - 1896) was an American journalist and Egyptologist, who notably was one of the discoverers of the Elephantine Papyri as well as the producer of the first English translation of Victor HugoÕs Les Miserables. He came to be involved with William Tweed when his paper manufacturing company obtained many city contracts in questionable dealings with Tammany Hall. When TweedÕs power fell he placed himself into voluntary exile, leaving the United States to travel abroad as a consultant of archaeological treasures for the British Museum and renown libraries throughout the continent. His legacy as an important figure in the study and preservation of ancient Egyptian history remains to this day, with substantial donations to university libraries, museum and archival collections, and honorary professorships.
