The book is accompanied by three unused color-photograph postcards, each in fine condition. CONDITION -- This is a previously owned book that remains clean and attractive with but near-negligible signs of handling, with the following noted: EXTERIOR -- Various scattered blind indentations of no great effect - looks clean and bright. These two consecutive wood engravings from pages 119 and 120 of the 1882 Estes and Lauriat publication "Heart of Europe" present two of Vienna's most celebrated landmarks, contrasting the soaring medieval Gothic architecture of its great cathedral with the refined baroque elegance of its palace…gardens. The first illustration, captioned "St. Stephen's Cathedral, Vienna," magnificently captures the Stephansdom, which the text proclaims bears no comparison with any other church in point of churches, standing in the very heart of the old city amidst the busiest life of one of the gayest capitals in Europe; the engraving emphasizes the cathedral's famous south tower with its intricate Gothic tracery and spire rising dramatically above the steeply pitched roof covered in distinctive patterned tiles, while horse-drawn carriages and pedestrians animate the surrounding square, conveying the vibrant urban context of this spiritual monument where, as the text poetically notes, one step inside transports the visitor to a cool, dark solitude, silent and impressive as some primeval forest, with a few people kneeling upon the stone pavement and the faint sound of chanting coming at intervals from hidden singers. The second engraving, captioned "Garden of the Belvedere," presents a sweeping panoramic view across the formal French-style gardens separating the Upper and Lower Belvedere palaces, with manicured parterres, ornamental pools, and carefully arranged trees leading the eye toward the distant cityscape of Vienna dominated by church spires and domes beneath the backdrop of rolling hills; small figures stroll the pathways, lending scale to this imperial pleasure ground that housed one of Europe's finest art collections. The text enriches the cathedral image by describing the great tower as considered one of the most beautiful works of Gothic architecture, while the great roof tells the story of five centuries repeating itself forever, capturing the Victorian romantic sensibility toward medieval heritage.
