Staying with the technology books I have been listing of late, here s one that spans the intersection of mathematics and chemistry. I am very pleased be to able to present a very nice copy of: Statistical Methods in Research and Production, with Special Reference to the Chemical Industry, by Owen L. Davies. This medium-sized hard cover book (6 ½ x 10 inches, 292 pages) was published for the Imperial Chemical Industries Limited (ICI), one of Britain s largest industries for many years, by Oliver and Boyd of London and Edinburgh, and dated 1947. There is a printed A* on the title page which I think means that this is the First Edition. The book is bound in dark blue cloth with prominent gilt titles on the spine. This book has some other things going for it which might appeal to the collector or mathematical historian. It is one of the best-known books on this subject ever released, with 171 editions published between 1947 and 1988, in 3 languages. This particular copy has a former owner s name and address on the front endpaper, the same surname (Davies) who was in the Department of Mathematics at the Imperial College of Science and Technology. There is a nice little bookseller s label on the front endpaper as well, from Foleys on Charing Cross Rd., London. Condition: This book is in very good condition. There is some very slight edge wear to the hard covers of this book at the corners and spine tips and there is also a small bump to the lower front edge. Inside, as mentioned, there is the former owner s inked name and station along with a shadow of light acid staining from the binding glues. There is some very minor and incipient foxing on the early and late pages of the book but this does not extend into the interior pages which are bright and clean. There are a few pages which has some light penciled underlining or marginal notations, scarce, random and probably erasable. Both hinges are fully intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.
