Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Near Fine. 1st Edition. Signed by Author(s) A near fine book, clean and square and bright, with page edges which are very lightly age toned but that is just because of it's age, in a near fine DW which again is very lightly age toned with a few minor creases but nothing of any significance, and n…o loss at all. It is not priceclipped. The book is signed without inscription. Signed on the title page, signed simply William Trevor. The book was supressed for many a year possibly because of Sir William's dissatisfaction with it but it was published later as a paperback. This is only the third copy I've ever seen of this book in 40yrs of collecting and only the 2nd with a DW. ISigned by Author(s).

The dustwrapper is complete with no wear, tears or pieces missing but there is a horizontal crease to the bottom edge (likely caused by an old dustwrapper protector now discarded). Add to basketFirst edition, first impression; 8vo; light foxing to prelims and endpapers, else unmarked internally; publisher's dark blue cloth, silver lettering to spine, with the price-clipped pictorial dust-jacket by Freda Nichols, some spotting and soiling, spine and extremities sunned, short closed tear to top edge of front panel, mild…edge-wear, else very good. First edition of the author's true first novel, which he subsequently disowned and refused to be reissued. Preceding the 1964 novel, The Old Boys, generally regarded as Trevor's first novel, A Standard of Behaviour was disowned by Trevor after publication and has been largely forgotten. It was written while Trevor was (unsuccessfully) working as a copywriter at an advertising agency and deals with several themes common in the author's later work including boredom, idleness, wealth, and the difficulty of establishing meaningful relationships.
