Previous owner signature of Isadore Leighton Luce, Smith College April 1922. Isadore Smith (1902-1985) who published as Ann Leighton, was born in Portsmouth, N.H., graduated from Smith College in 1923, and married Archibald William Smith (1897-1962), a veteran of the First World War. Their home on Argilla Road in Ipswich overlooked Fox Creek. Col. Smith was the author of two books, A captain departed, (New Haven, Yale University Press, (published 1935) and A gardener's book of plant names; a handbook of the meaning and origins of plant names. (New York, Harper & Row, (published 1963).

Complete with 8 color plates by Arthur Rackham, each with the original tisssue guard. Traces of shelf wear at corners and spine edges, else clean and tight with bright gilt. Former owner's gift inscription on half-title page else unmarked. An attractive hardcover book in very good condition. Classic Arthur Rackham title with his ethreal drawings of children with nymphs, angels, etc.

Condition: very good. 1st Trade Edition. ix,132pp. Large octavo with green cloth boards. Gilt lettering and decoration on front and spine, and endpapers with green pattern. Colour illustrated frontispiece and seven coloured plates. Very small bookseller's stamp on front pastedown. Board corners and edges, and spine edges have mild wear. Back endpaper has some foxing. very good Sixteen poems from Noble Prize nominee and English writer, Algernon Charles Swinburne. The poems have been collected from Swinburne's various works and all have overarching themes of children or childhood life. With a preface by Edmund Gosse and eight lovely full page illustrations from Arthur Rackham.

First edition, first printing with these illustrations. Publisher's original green cloth with gilt titles and illustration to the upper board and spine, in dustwrapper. An excellent near fine copy, the binding clean and square with a bump at the top of the spine. The contents are entirely complete and without inscriptions or stamps. All 8 full-page colour plates with tissue guards and 52 black and white illustrations throughout the text are present as called for and in fine condition. Complete with the original dustwrapper which is a little rubbed and nicked with a few short closed tears and associated creasing at the spine tips. An attractive example. Top edge gilt., patterned endpapers. Contemporary armorial bookplate to the front paste-down. Some isolated foxing to the spine, and discoloration to the endpapers. Else clean and sharp internally.
