Hard Cover. No Jacket. Rackham, Arthur (illustrator). The edges are chipped ; the green buckram is bubbling, not seriously on the front board, quite badly at the back, the lifting does not affect the gilt titles and illustrations on the front board and spine which remain clear. The front board also has a small white stain.There's a neat signature on the front end paper and minor foxing to the preliminaries. Internally, the book is immaculate. The 8 tipped in colour plates are crisp and sharp and all have their titled tissue paper. A very good copy with not so very good boards. Scan available on request. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.

The upper cover corners are bumped, light age-related tanning to the endpapers, small tear to the inner hinge at the front endpaper gutter. Small adhesion of the tissue guard to the plate margin (at p. 98), not affecting the image. Text and plates are generally clean. The 1926 American reprint. The orginal edition was in 1918. "As the close of his life approached, Swinburne frequently expressed his intention to extract from his various volumes those poems which were addressed to children, or were descriptive of child life, and to publish them in a separate collection. He died without having found occasion to carry out this plan, and he left no directions with regard to the way in which it ought to be done. [-] One reason why Swinburne never brought out such a collection was his failure to find an artist who could interpret to his satisfaction the simplicity and freshness of his verses. We are fortunate in having secured, in Mr. Arthur Rackham, one whose delicate and romantic fancy is in sensitive harmony with Swinburne's, and who understands, no less than he did, how 'Heaven lies about us in our infancy.' Signed limited edition, number 521 of 765 copies signed by the artist. This edition includes an additional colour plate that is not present in the trade edition. It depicts Swinburne as Pan addressing a group of children beneath a typically Rackhamesque tree. A contemporary review in The Bookman states, "Arthur Rackham has caught the very spirit and changing moods of the poems very happily in his delicately finished series of colour pictures, and his many little sketches of children, scattered through its pages as head- and tail-pieces, add much to the charm of one of the most beautiful gift-books." First Rackham edition, signed limited issue, number 631 of 765 copies signed by the artist. A contemporary review described the edition as "one of his best. [Rackham's] delicate and romantic fancy is in sensitive harmony with Swinburne's poems and his pictures show that he understands no less than did the poet" (The Publisher's Weekly, vol. 94, 1918, p. 19). A very good copy, attractively bound, pale damp stains to fore and inner margins of a few pages, text unaffected, contents otherwise clean.
