Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Printed in the U.S.A. Preface, list of characters; ix, 246 pages. The original turquoise cloth is in excellent shape except for slight bumping of the spine ends; the lettering on the upper board and spine---with its orange title square---is bright and clear. The interior leaves are bright, crisp and clean; however, my philosopher-father wrote the date, 1958, neatly in ink, on the title page. [Visible in one of the multiple images of the actual book---which see.] The original pictorial dustjacket is a bit rubbed and spotted with a sunned spine; it is price-clipped, though a rather discreet $3.95 is stamped on the flap. Gathered from the preface by Anne Morrow Lindbergh: "'There are, I am persuaded, persons who have had a glimpse of something so perfect that they are afterwards impatient with the imperfect world about them, and all the imperfect people. It may be a religious revelation or a vision from pure reason. If these people lack the courage to embrace the leper of imperfection, the result is for them disharmony.' I have copied this paragraph from Haniel Long's posthumous novel. Pondering on it and using it as a lens through which to review my impression of him, I wonder if here, in the opening phrase, we are not very close to the author. . . . He wrote: 'How few people make a demand of the soul.' He made demands of the soul and he wished people to make such demands of him. . . . 'Sooner or later hell happens to everyone.'" As with every book from my father's collection, tipped in at the front is the small, attractive, acid-free bookplate pictured on my homepage. All books are wrapped with special care and are shipped promptly---domestic sales sent with 'delivery confirmation' tracking; international sales sent via global priority, also with tracking. Please note that, due to COVID-19, overseas shipping may incur unusual delays.
