A touch of shelfwear at corners and spine tips, else fine, in very good plus dustjacket with light wear and rubbing to edges and folds of fragile dark brown uncoated paper, thumbnail sized scrape at top of front panel and one-inch tear at lower edge of front panel. Scarce. Cohen died in November of 2016.

Front free endpaper damaged from what appears to be rough removal of a library pocket. Front hinge weak with webbing revealed from half title page. The dust jacket, wrapped in archival mylar, is in very good condition. We have not removed the jacket to inspect the boards closely, but as far as we can see the boards and block appear to be in very good condition. 350 grams. A nicely-produced book, with gilt lettering to spine and cover, patterned paper for the endpapers, and with Newfeld's illustrations complementing the mood of the text.

This rare wrapper with this uncommon illustration was designed by M.Mohan on the front with a portrait of Leonard Cohen on the back photographed by Sofie Baker. White wrapper over the 96 pp. in the original yellow wrapper with the Cape logo with black title on the front and down the spine. Some slight aging from handling and shelf use.

The Spice-Box of Earth is Canadian poet and songwriter Leonard Cohen's second collection of poetry. It was first published in 1961 by McClelland and Stewart, when Cohen was 27 years old. The book brought the poet a measure of early literary acclaim. One of Cohen's biographers, Ira Nadel, stated that "reaction to the finished book was enthusiastic and admiring. . .[noting that] the critic Robert Weaver found it powerful and declared that Cohen was 'probably the best young poet in English Canada right now.'".
