[And:] Speech of sir william molesworth, bart. m.p. in the house of commons, on the 10th of april, 1851, for a reduction of the colonial expenditure of the united kingdoms. London. James Ridgway, [1851]. First edition. 41pp, [1]. 8vo. Contemporary burgundy cloth, black calf lettering-piece. Rubbed and marked, spine sunned. Armorial bookplate of John Davies Enys to FEP, very occasional light spotting. A sammelband of four mid-nineteenth century parliamentary speeches delivered by politician William Molesworth (1810-1855) regarding the governance and financial administration of British overseas territories including Canada, the West Indies, New Zealand, and Australia. Molesworth devoted much of his career to addressing the maladministration of the Colonial Office. His moral outrage regarding the transportation of convicts to Australia led to him chairing a parliamentary select committee to investigate the issue. The inquiry amassed a great deal of evidence besmirching the conditions of the penal colonies, with Molesworth's resulting report contributing to the phasing out of the practice, which finally ceased in 1853. John Davies Enys (1837-1912), British naturalist who's career was primarily devoted to the discovery and categorisation of native species of Lepidoptera and pteridophytes.
