Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. PEYREFITTE's CLASSIC 1943 GAY NOVEL TURNED INTO A FILM Roger Perfrefitte. LES AMITIES PARTICULIERES, Roman, Paris, Jean Vigneau, 1943 (1944), tan wrappers lettered in black & red, large quarto, 380 pp. + printing page notes, book is variously catalogued because printer's note introduces an ambiguity where the printing was done on May 23, 1943 but the legal deposit was not made until 1944 -thus 1944 on the title page for a true first edition; NEAR FINE with a touch of soil and normal age to paper; this copy is #XCIX of the "Sur Papier Edition" issue; this copy is inscribed by Peyrefitte on the flysheet to someone whose name we cannot decipher but he uses the term homage as he does with some other books inscribed to noted authors or film people so that is probably the connection to be de-ciphered; this book was published in USA under title SPECIAL FRIENDSHIPS much later; a largely autobiographical novel of the friendship between two schoolboys and the interference of the school's priest - book was made into a French film by Jean Delannoy which shocked the country in the 1960s; catalogued at Yale under Gay Fiction; reprinted in 1945 by Flammarion and also later Vigneau printings and then wholesale reprinting before and after movie fame; most collections have reprints or an American edition, true first French edition is exceedingly RARE, an excellent candidate for a books-into-film collection.
