Johns Book." Initial leaves inclusive to page 34 slightly pulled; antiquarian ink stamp of C.R. Johns on front free endpaper; ink notation upon dedication page; pencil writing of page xix's blank verso; ink notation at top margin of page 27; pencil writing on rear pastedown. Moisture staining evident at bottoms of leaves with diminishing effect through page 150 or so; mostly mild to moderate foxing throughout. Bottom corner of pages 161-162 torn out but without loss of text. OCLC cites five copies among member libraries and all being third editions with the same jump in pagination from xix to 25. Interesting mid-19th century Spanish reader presumably intended as a school text for older English students. "Advertisement to the Third Edition" and Preface in English with primary reading text in Spanish save for English footnotes. Reader section (pages 25-146) divided into passages by various authors of moral lessons, anecdotes, witticisms and tales, select sentences, heroic actions, narrations, descriptions, speeches and addresses, allegories and fictions, and poetry. Pages 147-279 is a Vocabulary section, i.e. a Spanish to English dictionary. A good copy of a still fairly early American Spanish language instructor by Mariano CubiÌ y Soler, a noted Baltimore phrenologist and Catalan-Spanish teacher.
