Chiappe was the first friend Frederich Prokosch made on arrival at Cambridge University, a relationship the highly respected Shakespeare scholar and professor of 17th century English literature at Columbia maintained until his untimely passing of a heart attack in Paris aged 52. One of the author's "Butterfly Books". The work of the poet, novelist, translator and publisher Frederic Prokosch, hailed as something completely new in modern literature, received effusive praise from T. S. Eliot, W. B. "Pears from the boughs hung golden, / The street lay still and cool, / Children with books and satchels / Came sauntering home from school . . ." Frederic Prokosch is remembered not for his novels such as The Asiatics (1935) but for the ante-dated forgeries that he had printed, purporting to be from the 1930s, of poems by distinguished writers of his acquaintance. In The Butterfly Books (1987) Nicolas Barker gives a careful account of the detective work he undertook to uncover the man who "had a real talent as a writer, if a small one, but a unique place in the history of forgery". Prokosch's "Butterfly Books" originated in poetry pamphlets, by himself, that he had printed at Yale in 1932 and that then became a Christmas series. In 1943 he had been posted by the US Office of War Information to Stockholm; his Christmas contribution that year, Song (mistitled So Long by Barker), was apparently printed at Albert Bonniers' printing house in the city. This one additionally inscribed by Prokosch with a Christmas greeting to Josephine Crane, the major New York socialite and patron of the arts, a longtime friend of the poet. Delicate wrapper split down the spine and with a small chip from one corner.

In the early 1930s Prokosch began producing small, hand-printed editions of his own writings, as well as work by authors he admired, and continued the practice until 1960. Many he sent to authors as Christmas presents. Queneau (1903-1976) was influenced by Prokosch, and founded the Modernist poetry group Oulipo, the poetry of which was based on mathematical patterns. He "produced some of the most important prose and poetry of the mid-20th century. From Queneau's Surrealist period in the 1920s he retained a taste for verbal juggling, a tendency toward black humour, and a derisive posture toward authority. His puns, sneers, spelling extravaganzas, and other linguistic contortions concealed a total pessimism, an obsession with death" (Britannica online). He authored the modernist novel Exercises in Style, telling the same story in 99 forms. Two works, sextodecimo. Original marbled wrappers, gilt paper labels to front covers. Slight chip to label of Island Song, very minor handling creasing, still in excellent condition.
