Book
Paperback. Condition: Very Good. In his first sixty days, President Phil Chase intends to prove he can change the world. A highly topical, taut, witty and entertaining science thriller. By the time Phil Chase is elected President of the United States, the world's climate is well on the way to irrevocable change. It could be that a mass extinction event is beginning. A lot of the big mammals - tigers, gorillas - may already be in their last moments. But now even the Pentagon agrees that climate change is a bigger threat than terrorism, Phil Chase has the trillion-dollar military budget to call on for the technologically sublime task of saving the world. Frank Vanderwal, in the office of Presidential science advisor, finds something reassuring about the world being so messed up. It makes his own life look like part of a trend. He's been homeless for a year, the ex-husband of the love of his life did permanent injury to his nose - probably his brain - with a punch, and the love of his life has had to go into hiding from the secret service, which has Frank under surveillance, too . but meanwhile there's the world to save. Frank's a scientist. He has to save the world so that science can proceed, obviously. This has become known as the Frank Principle. China is close to meltdown, the security agencies are in overdrive, carbon figures are close to cooking the world . and the team has sixty days to establish a new reality. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Octavo, boards. Signed on the title page by Robinson. "Dystopia. The third volume of a trilogy concerned with the disaster being brought about by global warming. The first two volumes, FORTY SIGNS OF RAIN. London: HarperCollins, 2004; and FIFTY DEGREES BELOW. London: HarperCollins, 2005, are political novels concerned with the growing crisis and the lack of political will to deal with it. This volume describes both the dystopia that results and the recovering world produced by the efforts of a small group of dedicated people." - Sargent, British and American Utopian Literature, 1986-2009. Hardcover. First edition. Near Fine in Near Fine Embossed Pictorial Dust Jacket with original price ($25.00). Flat signed by author on title page. A widely praised novel from Robinson, winner of both the Hugo and Nebula Awards. The novel focuses on the the consequences of global warming, both on a global level, and as it affects the main characters: several employees of the National Science Foundation and those close to them. Buddhist philosophy is one of Robinson's recurring themes, represented here by the agency of ambassadors from Khembalung, a fictional Buddhist micro-state located on an offshore island in the Ganges delta. Their state is threatened by rising sea levels, and the reaction of the Khembalis is compared to that of the Washingtonians. Orange paper over boards with red cloth backstrip and gilt titling on spine. Covers show very mild wear. Dust Jacket shows very light shelf wear, very mild rubbing on rear. Previous owner's bookplate at front pastedown; otherwise interior is clean, crisp, tight & bright, and other than author's signature unmarked. 388 pp. Approx. 6.5" x 9.5". An excellent copy. Carefully shipped in secure parcel. Ask all questions; glad to respond.
