First Edition stated, first printing of the American edition, with 1956 date on title page, and no later printings on the copyright page. Signed and dated, August, 1971, on the title page, by Sir Mortimer Wheeler. Book is about near fine. Bright, tight and clean, inside and out. Binding and hinges are strong and sound. Pages and endpapers are bright and clean. Previous owner's name on front endpaper. Red cloth shows minor shelf-rubbing along edges and tips. Original DJ with $4.00 price intact on flap. DJ is bright and attractive with minor light soiling on rear. A most attractive, uncommon signed copy of Mortimer's classic, recounting his archaeological exploits in England, Wales, India, and Pakistan, amongst other locales, helping explain why he was considered the greatest archaeologist of his day, his incredible and lasting contributions to the field of archeology, and why he was honored, and knighted, by King George VI, in 1954.
