By the year this version appeared, the Portuguese translation had gone through a number of Paris editions (1830, 1834, 1837, 1839) and at least two Lisbon editions (1833, 1842).Laurent-Pierre de Jussieu (Villeurbanne, 1792-1866, Passy) was a French writer in the moralizing tradition. Simon de Nantua, written for the Société pour l'Instruction Elémentaire, was extremely popular during the nineteenth century. Its hero travels from fair to fair in France for forty years, accumulating wisdom and dispensing sage advice.*** Cf.
