Side by Side was published just five years after the artists first met. This "contemporary sculpture novel" is divided into the chapters "With Us in the Nature", "A Glimpse Into the Abstract World", and "The Reality in Our Living", with alternating prose and illustrations. The text of the final chapter consists of the lyrics to Flanagan and Allen's Underneath the Arches (1932), printed 19 times, on each occasion facing a new illustration. That musical piece also featured in other early works by Gilbert & George, including their art installation The Living Sculpture (1969), in which the duo sang along to a recording while covered in colourful metallic powder in imitation of statues.
