First edition of 500 signed copies signed in silver; design by Naomichi Kawahata; 8vo (247 x 182 mm, 9¾ x 7¼ in); black-and-white photographs; self-endpapers, photo-illustrated perfect-bound wrappers, text in pink, photo-illustrated dust-jacket, text in pink, machine-folded leaflet with text in English and Japanese laid in, publisher's cardboard slipcase, titles stamped on spine and front in pink, minor toning, fine in a near-fine dust-jacket; [608]pp. Moriyama has been photographing in Shinjuku since the 1960s. In the accompanying text, he writes, 'At night, camera in hand, when I walk from Kabukicho to Kuyakusho Street, and then walk along Okubo Street to Shinokubo Station, every once in awhile I get a chill up my spine. Without anything in particular happening, I sense myself flinching somewhere. Under neon or other lights, in the darkness of the back streets, people become shadows and look as if they are squirming. The cells of my body slightly buzz with tension, and I sense the air around me like a sudden storm. I tell myself that if you're a cameraman, there is no choice but to shoot in Shinjuku. This is because this is none other than Shinjuku itself, the great skid row.'.
