A sound tight copy of the first edition of this early Shell Guide to Oxfordshire, produced by John Piper under the series editorship of John Betjeman. Contents very good and clean, in good yellow boards with orange lettering. The boards show some moderate handling and slight bumping; the spine shows browning. Very slight foxing to title page. Attractive black and white endpapers showing a mix of miscellaneous printed items. Two coloured maps and 25 pages of the usual alphabetical place notes, with many evocative photographs by Maurice Beck. Also includes: an introductory essay on Oxfordshire; an essay on 'Deserted Places' by Myfanwy Evans; a four-page gazetteer of Monuments, by Katharine Esdaile; and a two-page listing of notable people connected with the county. Overall a nice copy of a historic publication.

Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. [1938.] First edition. Cloth edition. Batsford. London. [1938.] First edition. Cloth edition. Hardback; yellow cloth-bound boards, titles in red, dust jacket. 47 pages. Illustrated endpapers, many b&w photos and sketches, colour map. English. 230x185mm. 0.4kg. Near fine, in very good dust jacket; slight shelf wear to forecorners and spine ends, neat small tape repair to verso of head of spine, light spotting to verso of jacket, slight marks to surface of white jacket; boards and pages clean and fresh. A very well-preserved first edition copy of Oxon, written and illustrated by John Piper. Oxon was the first of the Shell guides that John Piper worked on. He and his wife, Myfanwy Evans, had recently purchased a run-down farmhouse in Fawley Bottom, Oxfordshire. During 1937 and '38 the pair toured the Oxfordshire countryside collecting material for the guide. As well as providing the text, Piper took the majority of the photographs in the guide himself, with the remainder being mostly taken by Maurice Beck. The guide includes an essay on 'Deserted Places' by Evans, the gazetteer, an article on 'Monuments' by K. A. Esdaile, and a list of 29 notable Oxfordshire locals. Oxon does not include details of Oxford city as this was being covered by John Betjeman in An Oxford University Chest published in the same year. The Pipers focussed on the rural and the domestic, and the guide's aims and Cotswoldian interests remain relevant. [Heathcote, David. A Shell Eye on England. Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Spiral bound 1st Edition signed by John Piper on the title page. No date but the B.T Batsford Ltd edition with 'Two and Sixpence' in black of the 1938 edition. Oxford city not included as Shell Guide Editor John Betjeman had covered it in his earlier 'Oxford University Chest.' In his preface John Piper said he considered Betjeman's 'Devon Guide' the best but many consider it is this one. Slightly rubbed and creased at edges and couple of age spots around title page but generally very good condition with black and white photos and clear text. Signed by Author(s).
8vo. First edition. Alternative binding. Original yellow cloth overprinted in red. The jacket reproduces the original photographic covers. Two coloured maps and numerous black and white photographs throughout. Advertisement for Shell on the Road at the rear by Edward Bawden. Bookplate on front free endpaper. Unclipped d/w has a closed tear to the top edge of the front panel and chips to the spine ends. A bit rubbed at the edges. One of the most celebrated of the pre-war Guides. The City of Oxford was not included because that had been covered by John Betjeman's An Oxford University Chest (1938). The bookplate belongs to Melville Russell Cooke who was married to Helen Smith, daughter of the captain of the Titanic. A loose printed note explains more about the family. Apparently issued simultaneously with the usual ring bound version, this durable binding anticipates what Faber and Faber would do the following year when they took over the series.
