Well illustrated, large octavo, pp 64 + a double-page map, very clean internally, green cloth slightly mottled and with one small mark on the upper cover, the dustwrapper is not price-clipped and is in excellent condition and now protected in a clear cover. [The final page has an advertiseemt illustration by Edward Bawden.].

Originally published by Architectural Press in 1935, this is one of the first ten titles in this series edited by John Betjeman. The Gazetteer was largely compiled by Edith Olivier.and Lord Bolingbroke supplied the nature notes. The advertisement for Shell on the Road was by Edward Bawden. Contents clean and tight, if a little edge-worn. The boards are edge-worn with a little damage at the bottom of the spine. Corners bumped. The wrapper is 95% extant, but has several closed tears and chips. (unclipped) A fair copy only. Size: 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall.

Boards very slightly warped and foxed. Head of spine pushed. Near fine. The missing d/w featured a collage of photographs, old and new, of Wiltshire by Lord Berners. The Gazetteer was largely compiled by Edith Olivier. "Swindon, a place whose existence is regretted by those who seek the beautiful without reference to human development. This sentiment may be shared by the tourist. To the resident it is unacceptable. We cannot live only in the past, and Wiltshire, as this book will show, is not such an Austria among counties as most people think.".

A very well-preserved first edition copy of Wiltshire, one of the earliest Shell Guides, after Betjeman's Cornwall. The series was published as guidebooks for the aspiring, car-driving metropolitan sightseer. The guide includes maps and chapters on antiquities, industries, nature notes, war and sport. It ends with a gazetteer compiled by Edith Olivier. Lord Berners designed the front and back covers, creating a collage of various photographs, old and new, of Wiltshire places and people. The majority of the photographs were taken by Maurice Beck and Christopher Sykes contributed a line drawing.
