Boards very slightly warped and foxed. Head of spine pushed. Near fine. The missing d/w featured a collage of photographs, old and new, of Wiltshire by Lord Berners. This sentiment may be shared by the tourist. To the resident it is unacceptable. We cannot live only in the past, and Wiltshire, as this book will show, is not such an Austria among counties as most people think.".

Add to basketCondition: Very Good. Cover designed by Lord Berners. (illustrator). April 1935. First edition. The Architectural Press. London. April 1935. First edition. Paperback; spiral-bound wrappers. 64 pages. Illustrated throughout in b&w. English. 230x185mm. 0.3kg. Very good; light shelf wear to wrappers, slight wear to forecorners, spiral binding solid; a very good copy of a fragile item. A very well-preserved first edition copy of Wiltshire, one of the earliest Shell Guides, after Betjeman's Cornwall. The series was published as guidebooks for the aspiring, car-driving metropolitan sightseer. The guide includes maps and chapters on antiquities, industries, nature notes, war and sport. It ends with a gazetteer compiled by Edith Olivier. Lord Berners designed the front and back covers, creating a collage of various photographs, old and new, of Wiltshire places and people. The majority of the photographs were taken by Maurice Beck and Christopher Sykes contributed a line drawing.
