Condition: Good. Shakespeare's Complete Works (or, The Works of Shakespeare) complete set in 40 volumes edited by Wiliam J. Rolfe. Published between 1880 (Tragedy of Macbeth) and 1922 (Merchant of Venice). Approximately 17.5 cm. No jacket. The 1880's and 1890's volumes were published by Harper & Brothers, Publishers, New York. The later ones (most volumes) in the early 1900's were published by The American Book Company, New York/Cincinnati/Chicago, with Harper & Brothers mentioned on the copyright page. Description: Reddish/orange boards with gold detain on front covers and spine. Previous owner's name and date (1923) on ffep on almost all volumes. Most volumes are unmarked and in very good condition considering their age. The earlier volumes contain more wear on the covers than the later ones. Tragedy of Macbeth is unmarked; however, it shows signs of being used including binding beginning to loosen - but the pages are still fully attached. King Henry the Fourth, parts 1 and 2 contain underlining and marginalia in pen on most of the pages. King Henry the Fifth contains underlining and marginalia as well, on less than half the pages, in pencil. A handful of volumes with light wear on covers, rubbing along spine, boards beginning to separate from binding but still fully attached. Overall, an attractive and uncommon set. Uncommon set of the Bard's works, this edition with three copyright dates (1883, 1882, 1898), presumably this is the 3rd printing then. Included are vols. I, II, IV, V, VI, VIII, IX, X, XI. Titus Andronicus, Henry VI Parts I, II, III, Comedy of Errors, Two Gentlemen of Verona, Midsummer-Night's Dream, Romeo and Juliet, King John, King Richard II, King Henry IV Pars I, II, King Henry V, Merry Wives of Windsor, Twelfth Night, Much Ado About Nothing, As You Like It, All's Well that Ends Well. All volumes with heavy rubbing and toning, lean, corner bumps, light fray, spine fade; several with exterior stains, cracked title hinges, tender hinges. Frontis' intact but only vol.
