Hardcover. Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. First edition. First of three such collections by the brilliant comic illustrator C. H. Bennett. Original boards. Lithographic title page and 23 further plates, all in color. Fair-good copy, paper-covered boards detached, scuffed, and browned from oxidation. Front and rear boards repeat two different illustrations from the plates. Title page and last plate still attached to the boards, all other plates are loose in the perished binding. Lower corner of one plate torn off, not affecting the image. Plates otherwise in clean condition. The shadows cast by the human figures offer a sarcastic or sometimes sympathetic counterpoint to the subject, e.g. a glutton in a plate entitled Beef casts a shadow resembling a bull. Small pencil gift inscription on front flyleaf from artist Jan Balet to his friend and fellow illustrator Joe Kaufman, dated '48 [1948].

Hardcover. Condition: Fair. "Shadows: Second Series" by Charles H. Bennett. Undated but probably published ~1856-1860 by W. Kent & Clo (Late D. Bogue) in London, Britain. Believe this to be the original boards so most likely First Edition. Believe this is a complete set of illustrations. Charles Henry Bennett (18281867) was a British Victorian illustrator who pioneered techniques in comic illustration. Volume contains 32 illustrations (including title page and frontis) of hand-colored humorous drawings by Bennett of various British characters and the shadows they create that reveal their true nature. Satire that caricatures Victorian society. WorldCat has only 4 of these books listed (of which only 1 appears to be the same as this one). Could only find one other copy of this book for sale (and the illustrations are in B&W and not the original boards). Book is in Fair condition. Original outer spine is missing. Corners are bumped/split. Rubbing/staining on covers. Part of the front cover by right edge has top layer of cover torn off. Interior is in Fair condition. All of the illustration pages are unbound except for 2 (the frontis and last illustrations). Possibly done on purpose as I have seen many other similar books that have been rebound with different boards. Illustrations are in Very Good condition though they do all have some foxing/staining on the edges. Still a very unique and extremely rare book! Your purchase supports a small business.
