Venant d'un monde d'injustices et de pauvreté noire, Julian découvre en cet heureux an 2000 une société utopique qui a rompu avec le capitalisme et l'individualisme, pour y substituer tout à la fois la méritocratie (au travers d'un système de grades hiérarchiques) et l'égalité (même revenu pour tous et toutes). L'ouvrage, très facile à lire, non dénué d'anticipations pénétrantes (sur la condition des femmes, sur les cartes de crédit), rencontra un immense succès dans le monde anglo-saxon, et contribua même aux États-Unis à la naissance du Mouvement technocratique dans les années 1930.
