Paperback. Condition: Good. Poetry. Sarah Vap's END OF THE SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY is a beautiful collection of the most critically astute filth I've ever read. With humor, stunning insight, and shimmering vulgarity Vap invents a fresh means of poetic critique in the poem itself. Wheshe unveils for us is our own culpability in the gendered policing of contemporary poetry. I, for one, feel stimulated at being called out. I love this book.--Dawn Lundy Martin.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. 'Love is nothing without feeling. And feeling is still less without love.'Celebrated in its own day as the progenitor of 'a school of sentimental writers', A Sentimental Journey (1768) has outlasted its many imitators because of the humour and mischievous eroticism that inform Mr Yorick's travels. Setting out to journey to France and Italy he gets little further than Lyons but finds much to appreciate, in contrast to contemporary travel writers whom Sterne satirizes in the figures of Smelfungus and Mundungus. A master of ambiguity and double entendre, Sterne is nevertheless as concerned as his peers with exploring the nature of virtue; unlike other writers of sentimental fiction Sterne insists on the inseparability of desire and feeling. This new edition includes a selection from The Sermons of Mr Yorick, which shed light on the concerns of the Journey, The Journal to Eliza, which records Sterne's feelings as he languishes for the company of Eliza Draper, and A Political Romance, the satire on a local ecclesiastical squabble that was the catalyst for Sterne's literary career.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. When Yorick, the roving narrator of Sterne's innovative final novel, sets off for France on a whim, he produces no ordinary travelogue. Jolting along in his coach from Calais, through Paris, and on towards the Italian border, the amiable parson is blithely unconcerned by famous views or monuments, but he engages us with tales of his encounters with all manner of people, from counts and noblewomen to beggars and chambermaids. And as drama piles upon drama, anecdote, flirtation and digression, Yorick's destination takes second place to an exhilarating voyage of emotional and erotic exploration. Interweaving sharp wit with warm humour, irony with sentiment, A Sentimental Journey paints a captivating picture of an Englishman's adventures abroad.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. Many years ago, in 1902, as a result of the devastating eruption of Mt. Pelee on the island of Martinique, my great-grandmother fled her native land of Martinique and journeyed to Trinidad, where she subsequently was married, raised a family, and lived the rest of her life. In many heartfelt conversations, we often talked about the concept of home. We questioned where home was for the émigré and whether it was possible to experience home and homeland in different places. Was the notion of home confined only to one's place of birth, where memories of growing up and spiritual yearning to return were constant companions to daily living. My great-grandmother referred to these emotional longings as the "homing instinct."Finding Home: A Sentimental Journey is a personal account of my migration to America and my own quest to determine whether the emotional fervor and affection for the land of my birth could be experienced elsewhere. My own wonderings included asking if homeland applied only to the land where one's parents are buried and the only place where one can obtain a birth certificate? Was there such a concept as an adopted homeland? My great-grandmother wanted to know whether the homeland of her husband could become her adopted homeland. If that was true, could one experience feelings of disloyalty towards the land of one's birth? She yearned to return to her beloved Martinique. When she did return, her home was unrecognizable, much to her chagrin. So much had changed over the years. My journey to the USA many years later was for a different reason but nonetheless gave rise to similar questions and a determination to find the answers my great grandmother sought. In essence, my journey turned out to be one that spanned many years and was ably guided by the multi-faceted sentiments of love and commitment.…
