Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Still colorful teal cloth over boards, with still sharp and distinct black lettering to spine. Printed, illustrated paper dust wrapper protected by Brodart, chipping along bottom edge, price-clipped, else still quite attractive and graced with a fine borrowing from Thomas Bewick's The History of British Birds. Introduction by Phyllis Barclay-Smith, then 181 pp. of text including a one-page Index of all the birds about which are waxed lyrical, the Bittern to the Stormy Petrel. The quarter-page and half-page woodcuts are quite fine; more than 70 of them and their descriptions from Bewick's History of British Birds are accompanied by a short verse by "Tessimond," the pseudonym of the British poet, Arthur Seymour John Tessimond. The author of the Foreword, Phyllis Barclay-Smith, was then the Hon. Secretary of the Advisory Committee on Oil Pollution of the Sea, and she says that she has edited Bewick's descriptions "to retain his original text as far as possible, merely bringing certain information up to date in view of ore recent ornithological knowledge."Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards.
