Shmuel Leib Gordon (also wrote under the pen name Shmuel Ben-Zion)(1865 , Lida, near Vilnius, in Vilnius province (Plech Vilnius) in Lithuania, Russian Empire - November 19 , 1933, Eretz Israel, Tel Aviv ) was an educator, poet, Hebrew translator, and the most important interpreter of the Bible in recent generations. He lived most of his life in Warsaw, and his last years in Tel Aviv. He has a traditional Jewish education, in kheyder and a yeshiva, and in his adulthood engaged in commerce. He acquired his general education on his own, and from a young age engaged in teaching. The beginning of his literary work was as a poet. He published poems in Achiasaf and elsewhere and published several collections of poems called "Kinor Yeshuron" (1891, 1892, 1894). His poetry develops motifs from the history of the people of Israel and concentrates on the characters of martyrs, redeemers and miracle workers. In 1897, he immigrated to Eretz Israel, lived in Jaffa, and for three years taught Hebrew, literature, language and the Bible at the Hovevey Zion (Zion Lovers) school for boys . In 1901, after his position at the school was cut, he returned to Warsaw, where he founded a school in which the language of instruction was Hebrew. He founded and edited an illustrated children's newspaper in Hebrew "Olam Ketan" (= small world), the illustrated monthly for the youth "Nearim", the monthly for educational matters "The Pedagogue", and also authored several textbooks. He was a Zionist activist and the head of the " Hebrew Language Lovers " association in the Warsaw. In 1924 he returned to Eretz Israel, and until his death was engaged in culture, education and continued his life's great work, the writing of a modern Hebrew commentary on all the books of the Bible, including comprehensive scientific introductions to some of them. Gordon was also a prolific translator, translating into Hebrew the works of many authors, including William Shakespeare, Israel Zangwill, Paul Hayes, Jean de la Fontaine , Friedrich Hebbel , Heinrich Heine , Thomas Moore , Yehoash and Shimon Prog. At the beginning of the eulogy given by Haim Nachman Bialik, the national poet said: "His great commentary on the Bible, which he spent more than 20 years on, eclipsed his previous work, which was also substantial. His interpretation is a kind of Metzdat tziyon and Metzudat David (Fortress of David) of our times. . . .".

Gr.-8°, Ln. m. SU. IX, 359 S., 117* S. Neuwertiges Ex. ISBN: 9783161497742 Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 834.
