Illustrated with hundreds of paintings and drawings, chiefly in color, and followed by a section devoted to textual evidence on the scientific apparatuses employed by the artist to achieve accurate likenesses of the physical world. First American edition, first printing with full number line. Both an art history and a detective story concluding they did it all with mirrors and lenses. No previous ownership marks. A clean, fresh, unmarked copy with an incidental slight bump to bottom of rear board and mild undulation to very top edge of inner rear dust-jacket flap, else like new.
