Add to basketFirst edition, inscribed by the artist on the front free endpaper in red, blue, brown, and green watercolour paint, "for Richard love David". The recipient was the gallerist and art dealer Richard Salmon, who worked in collaboration with Karsten Schubert, shaping the foundation of Britart. Hockney elaborates on his theories about how some of Western art's most famous masterpieces, paintings by artists such as da Vinci, Caravaggio, Velázquez, and Van Eyck were actually created. His answer leads to fascinating insights into the history of art, that many of the world's most revered artists used mirrors and various optical devices such as the camera obscura to project images onto their canvasses and then traced the scenes. Quarto. Illustrated with 198 photographs, mostly full page. Original yellow boards, spine lettered in black, front board blindstamped, pictorial endpapers. With dust jacket. Head of spine knocked, dust jacket lightly spotted to verso, otherwise near fine in a very good unclipped dust jacket.
