Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. 8vo. Published by Faber And Faber, London, UK. 1958. 209 pgs. First Edition/First Printing. DJ has light shelf-wear present to the DJ extremities. Bound in cloth boards with titles present to the spine. Boards have light shelf-wear present to the extremities. No ownership marks present. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. When Second Class Taxi was first published by Fabers in 1958 the Nationalist Government of South Africa promptly banned it and it became illegal to own a copy, along with Black Beauty. Why? It mocked the stupidities and barbarities of that Nationalist Government. In terms of the law our hero, Staffnurse Phofolo -- his first name was commonly pronounced 'Stuffness', and how he acquired it was a story in itself -- was Idle and Undesirable, liable to instant arrest for having no Pass. But with his greatcoat to keep him warm and a convenient drainpipe to sleep in he didn't much mind about that. Indeed, if he had had a Pass he would probably never have got involved in all the peculiar happenings and with all the extraordinary people -- both white and black -- with which he did. With Professor and Mrs Hampshire, for example, who were Prominent Liberals and gave 'Liberal lunches' and called him Jackson; or with their daughter Andree; or with the Reverend Nkomo and his daughter Sadie; or with the White Government and the Black Government and boycott and African Congress of Equality; or with the second-class taxi. EB; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 209 pages.

Rep. "This is the story of Staffnurse Phofolo, a 'Non-European from Non-Europe'. In this novel of the 1950's, young Staffnurse is an 'illegal' black man. He inhabits a concrete drainpipe (a quite illicit dwelling), he frequents shebeens, he takes part in the Rand bus boycotts, and lives in Johannesburg without the requisite permit. He has no permit, in fact, to exist at all." Pp.209, slight toning to pages, name to fep. P/b, illustrated cover. G+.
