Værket ses på grund af den lange udgivelsestid meget sjældent komplet. Jacob Langebek (1710-75) forestod selv de første tre bind, hvorefter udgivelsen videreførtes af P.F. Suhm. Bind 8 forelå i materie i sommeren 1795, hvor hele materialet brændte sammen med to femtedele af København, så det i genskabt form først kom på tryk i 1834. Bind 9 udkom i 1878.
