Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. This offering is a pair of books, Volume I and Volume II which make up The Scottish Gael; or, Celtic Manners as Preserved among the Highlanders: Being an Historical and Descriptive Account of the Inhabitants, Antiquities, and National Peculiarities of Scotland; More Particularly of the Northern, or Gaelic Parts of the Country, Where the Singular Habits of the Aboriginal Celts are Most Tenaciously Retained. The books were written by James Logan and published by Smith, Elder, and Co., 65, Cornhill in 1831. They both appear to be First Editions but neither is stated as such. ( I must add that the TEXT appears to be the First Edition text. The boards appear to be "rebound boards". They are cloth and have really nice end pages. They look much too new for 1831 and are not the leather that one might expect.) Each book is 5 5/8" by 8 1/2", Volume I has 384 pages and Volume II has 436 pages. Each has a full color frontispiece, each has a Table of Contents, each has some black-and-white illustrations . . . and on the negative side, each has some annotating in pencil by a previous owner as well as foxing, particularly so to the earlier and later pages in each book. Considering the age of the books the foxing present really isn't all that bad. I've seen much, much worse. But for the foxing and annotations the books really are in good + working on very good condition despite being 184 years old. It's a quite nice set which is very readable; a find for the Scottish historian, archivist, and/or collector. Thank you!
