This lavish, richly illustrated production includes several fine examples of 19th-century colour lithography. Best known by his pseudonyms "P. L. Jacob" and "Bibliophile Jacob", Paul Lacroix (1806-1884) was a French historian and the curator of the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal in Paris. In the present set, both The Arts in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance and Manners, Customs, and Dress during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance are stated as "fourth thousand" on the title pages; the other works have no such statements. Five works, quarto. With 86 colour lithographs by F. Kellerhoven, Regamey, L. Allard and others, and over 2,000 woodcuts to the the text. Original black calf, spines with five raised bands, red and green morocco labels, compartments richly gilt, marbled endpapers, gilt edges.
