Edition limited to 550 numbered copies; this copy numbered 336 in typical Woolf purple ink, numbered by hand by either Virginia or Leonard themselves. Quite uncommon, pivotal work on Fry`s pictures. Faded and discoloured blue spine frayed at top and base and lettered in a darker blue. Internally significant browning to free endpapers, the front with three names and two dates; foxing to first blank and half title largely absent in the text thereafter but reappearing in the plate section; a 7 mm crack in the gutter between the plate section and rear free endpaper does not compromise sound binding. Illustrated with 16 full-page b/w reproductions of drawings by Roger Fry of Spanish cathedrales and churches. One of 550 copies. Binding in poor, interior in very good condition.
First edition. Cloth-backed decorated boards. With sixteen plates. Lawrence Gowing's copy, with his ownership signature to free endpaper. Spine and boards browned and dust-soiled, upper corner-tips chafed, offsetting to endpapers, else a good copy. Like Fry, Gowing was both a painter and an art historian. His introduction to Bloomsbury came through his relationship with Julia Strachey, which began in 1939. Edition limited to 550 copies.
