First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1945, issued from 1935 first edition plates. Fine hardcover in Very Good or better dustwrapper. A tale of "The Whistler." a mysterious, unknown figure who most people regarded as a legend. When two whistling strangers rode into town, one was the vaunted Whistler, and the other a notorious outlaw. But no one in Stilwell knew which was which. Edward Beverly Mann, son of a Methodist minister, was born in Hollis, Kansas, on January 31, 1902. A rugged sportsman, he was a columnist for "Field and Stream" and edited gun magazines, including "The American Rifleman" for the National Rifle Association. His commitment to the history of the west was fulfilled during his 1950s editing stint overseeing the University of New Mexico Press. When he died in 1989 he left his books and personal papers to the American Heritage Center at the University of Wyoming.
