First Edition, complete with all albumen photos (27 total), 228 p., 8.75 x 6.75 , 8vo. In fair condition. Original boards normally scuffed at edges and worn/bumped at corners. Spine has been restored with contemporary head and tail; original spine pasted-on over modern. Gilt lettering and deco normally dulled, especially at edges and corners, but overall attractive. All edges gilt (top dulled). Both front and rear gutters restored with binder s tape & mesh. Ownership bookplate found on front paste-down: Frederic Straker. Previous ownership signature, in ink, found at top edge of front end-page. Light foxing or age-staining found on front fly-leaf, end-age and title page. Some instances of age-staining throughout text-block; but all text remains legible. Albumen photos intact. Binder s ticket found on bottom edge of rear paste-down. Binding intact. Mary (1799 - 1888) and William (1792 - 1879) Howitt were both keen walkers and admirers of landscape in the Wordsworthian fashion and they enjoyed a late honeymoon in 1822, travelling some 500 miles on foot around Scotland and the Lake District. They wrote up their experiences for the Staffordshire Mercury. in August the same year, they settled in Nottingham. The following spring, Mary was thrilled to see a famous local attraction acres of purple crocus flowers in the Meadows and wrote her poem Wild Crocus in Nottingham Meadows. One of the first things they did was to join the Nottingham Subscription Library which had only recently moved to Bromley House on Angel Row. They remained members until 1836, enjoying the company of like-minded people. Their arrival coincided with their first collaborative book, The Forest Minstrels and Other Poems, published in 1823, the title poem inspired by William s ramblings in Sherwood forest. Of course, they presented a signed copy to the Library where it may still be perused, along with many of their other publications. FIRST EDITION! First edition, first and second series, 2 vols., small 4to (225 x 170 mm), [8], 228pp., 27 tipped-in albumen photographs; [6], 224pp., 26 tipped-in albumen photographs; some occasional minor foxing to both volumes, the first volume being the deluxe version bound in full red morocco over bevelled boards with an elaborately gilt-blocked, all-over design, in the centre of which, on both the front and back covers, are original photographs recessed within circular frames, all edges gilt, the second volume in bound in the publisher's matching original green cloth with elaborately gilt design and central photographic vignette to both covers, both in exceptional condition with just slight wear to head and foot on the second work. The 53 mounted albumen prints are by Bedford, Sedgfield, Wilson, Fenton and others, all laid in by hand. The binders are the work of Westley & Co., who are the subject of an article by Dr. Mirjam M. Foot, which first appeared in The Book Collector (Summer, 1982), and which has been included in her book, Studies in the History of Bookbinding [pp.248-250].
