Gorchov lleva desde finales de los años sesenta explorando las posibilidades de la pintura, concebida como un objeto, en lugar de como una representación. Al igual que los artistas Frank Stella, Robert Mangold y Richard Tuttle, el artista experimentó con la forma del lienzo al pri…ncipio de su carrera y creó la original forma que se ha convertido en su sello distintivo. Los cuadros de formas poco convencionales de Gorchov han recibido muchos nombres sillas de montar, máscaras, escudos, etc., pero ninguno los describe con exactitud. Ron Gorchov (nacido en 1930) se trasladó de Chicago a la ciudad de Nueva York en 1953, después de haber estudiado en la Universidad de Misisipi (Oxford), la escuela de Bellas Artes del Art Institute of Chicago y la Universidad de Illinois (Urbana-Champaign). En 1960 expuso por primera vez en solitario en la Tibor de Nagy Gallery de Nueva York. Posteriormente, ha expuesto en instituciones como el Museo de Arte Moderno de Nueva York, el Whitney Museum of American Art, el Queens Museum of Art, el New Museum of Contemporary Art y el P.S.1. Los cuadros de Gorchov forman parte de las exposiciones permanentes del Museo de Arte Moderno de Nueva York, el Whitney Museum of American Art, el Guggenheim y el Metropolitan Museum of Art.
