Add to basketFirst edition. First Edition. Original Printed Wrappers. 77pp.+4pp. of Advertisements including recto of rear wrapper. Map on rear wrapper entitled: "To Montana and Yellowstone Park by Rail Via The Union Pacific and Utah & Northern Railroads." Map on verso of front wrapper entitled: "Map Of Montana Territory 1879." Numerous engraved sketches throughout, many full-page. Sub-Titled: "Facts and Experiences on the Farming, Stock Raising, Mining, Lumbering, and Other Industries of Montana, and Notes on the Climate, Scenery, Game, Fish, and Mineral Springs, With Full and Reliable Data on Routes, Distances, Rates of Fare, Expenses of Living, Wages, School and Church Privileges, Society, Means of Acquiring Homes, and Other Valuable and Reliable Information Applicable to the Wants of the Capitalist, Homeseeker, or Tourist." In 1870, at the age of 18, Robert Strahorn went west for his health, as advised by his doctor. For the next 7 years, as a tramp printer, Strahorn worked as a correspondent for many newspapers in Denver, Greeley, Cheyenne, Central City, and Blackhawk. He served as a correspondent for the Rocky Mountain News, the Chicago Tribune, and others as he accompanied the army during the Sioux Wars of 1876 & 1877. He accompanied the Reynolds Campaign in early 1876, eventually testifying in court martial proceedings related to that campaign. Strahorn accompanied General Crook at the Battle of the Rosebud, a near disastrous fight against Crazy Horse and the Sioux, only days before Custer's defeat. During this campaign, fellow correspondent John Finerty described him as a correspondent "who in every situation proved himself as fearless as he was talented". Crook"s aide-de-camp, John G. Bourke wrote that Strahorn "remained throughout the entire campaign, winter and summer, until the last hostiles surrendered". In 1877, Strahorn's work caught the attention of Union Pacific Railroad president, Jay Gould, who greatly appreciated Strahorn's promotional writings, and hired him to form a literary bureau to write about the areas served by the Union Pacific Railroad, which he did until 1883. This work is a rare and important early promotional for Montana Territory, as well as Yellowstone National Park. It is full of detailed information important to any prospective settler or early visitor to the park. Ex-library copy from the Library of Congress, with a small oval stamp in upper corner of first illustration reading:"Library Of Congress Duplicate Exchanged". Some small, light, penciled notations at bottom of front wrapper, title page, and top edge of first illustration. Additional, very light, oval stamp imprint at top edge of front wrapper which reads:"BureauOf Statistics Apr 5 1881 Received". Some light general soiling to wrappers, bump to upper fore-corner of wrappers and text block, very small chip to fore-edge of rear wrapper, cloth tape used to neatly reinforce spine, and 1" closed-tear to upper edge of front wrapper along spine. In all, a very good copy of this rare Montana promotional.

Add to basket8vo (9" x 5.875"), original printed wrappers. 77, [3] pp. including twelve wood engravings (some full-page), and three pages of advertisements. Map of Montana Territory on interior of front wrapper. CONDITION: Very good plus, slight chipping to bottom of spine, wrappers slightly creased with a few scattered stains, light even tanning. All of Strahorn's promotional works on the great Northwest have become scarce. Most of this pamphlet discusses the opportunities in stock raising and mining in Montana, with a section on Yellowstone. It contains very early, handsome woodcut engravings of Helena and Bozeman, public buildings, Yellowstone Lake and Falls, and the like. Also included is information on farming, home expenses, and local infrastructure. The final three pages contain advertisements for local businesses and the Union Pacific Railroad. The map of Montana on the interior of the front wrapper shows the county divisions of the territory, towns and settlements, mountain ranges, missions, rivers, the location of Yellowstone Park, and more. Although Helena is given as the imprint, both Howes and McMurtrie assert that Omaha was the true place of publication. Strahorn himself was in fact employed by the Union Pacific Railroad, and his detailed Western promotionals were largely backed by the company as part of a long-term plan to encourage settlement and increase rail traffic. An excellent copy of this rare promotional, in original wrappers. REFERENCES: Howes S1057, "aa"; Streeter Sale 2252; Adams Herd 2184; McMurtrie (Montana) 162. Reese, Best of the West 236 (note).

Add to basket"8vo., (9 x 6 inches). 4-page Advertisement including recto of lower wrapper (vertical crease, professionally and gently washed and deacidified). Engraved frontispiece "Map of Montana Territory"; 12 illustrations in the text, including some full-page (evenly toned). Original publisher's gray printed paper wrappers with Union Pacific and Utah & Northern Railroads map on the lower cover (backstrip and small portion of lower wrapper repaired, not affecting the image, one or two pale stains). First edition. "It seems likely that the present work was compiled by Strahorn, printed at Omaha , and the edition sold to the Montana Legislature" (McMurtrie, Montana Imprints 162). It appears that Strahorn produced this pamphlet on behalf of the Union Pacific Railroad, as he worked in their Publicity Department at the time of publication, providing a map showing the route to Montana and Yellowstone Park on the lower wrapper (Sloan). The illustrations include a birds-eye view of Helena (not noted by Reps), which is the same view used in Warner's Montana directory of 1879. "When he was eighteen, Strahorn was advised by a physician to move to the Rockies for his health. In 1870 he went west, became a tramp printer, and for the next seven years crowded into his life the many experiences which made him a knowledgeable Westerner. He worked at the case, the desk, and the circulation counter for newspapers in Denver, Greeley, Cheyenne, Central City, and Black Hawk. He tried his luck at being a cowboy, but abandoned the attempt when a bronco bucked him off, leaving him with a lifelong injury (presumably hernia). "In September, 1877, Strahorn went to Marengo, Illinois, to marry Carrie Adell Green. En route, he gave a copy of [his book, The Hand-Book of Wyoming (1877)] to Thomas L. Kimball, general passenger agent for the Union Pacific in Omaha. After the wedding the young couple headed for Cheyenne and an uncertain future. On their way west, they stopped over in Omaha. There Strahorn learned that Kimball had shown the book to Jay Gould, president of the Union Pacific, and that Gould wanted Strahorn to form a literary bureau (an antecedent of the modern publicity department) for the railroad. "Gould planned to have Strahorn write guidebooks publicizing the entire area served and to be served by the Union Pacific. The new literary bureau would be a part of the passenger department, and it would be under Kimball's supervision. Strahorn was to travel throughout the West gathering information for the guidebooks that Kimball requested - a book about the Mountain West generally and a separate one about each of the individual states and territories. His job was not to publicize the Union Pacific but the entire West, not to sell Union Pacific lands but to attract settlers who would create freight tonnages and passenger revenues" (Oliver Knight, The Pacific Northwest Quarterly, 1968).".
