Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book, written in the early 19th century, began a national conversation about the humane treatment of the insane. The author provides background on the state of mental healthcare at the time, in which asylums were seen as prisons. The book outlines a radical new approach to treating mental illness, moving from one based on cruelty and ignorance to one based on medical science and compassion. The author, clearly ahead of his time, argues this approach should be widely adopted and accessible to all who need it. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. Two Frontispiece plates, tipped-in references slip, title page, 200 pp. Recent 1/4-cloth and boards. Embossed stamp on title page. First Edition. PRESENTATION COPY FROM SAMUEL B. WOODWARD: "Inscribed (in pencil): "Rev Dr. Jarvis/ with Dr Woodwards respects/ Worcester Sept 1837." "The State Lunatic Hospital at Worcester, Massachusetts was the first concrete product of the American asylum-building movement of the 1830s and 1840s, which, although based on unrealistically optimistic beliefs about the curability of insanity, nevertheless did much good by promoting a positive attitude toward improving the care and treatment of the insane. Dr. Samuel B. Woodward, the first superintendent of the Worcester State Hospital, was a pioneer in the treatment of mental diseases, whose success in dealing with the challenges of institutionalized care for the insane won him a national reputation. He founded and served as the first president of the Association of Medical Superintendents of American Institutions for the Insane (later the American Psychiatric Association)" (Norman 1824).
