Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION. 4 to. Orig. gilt black leather (likely a presentation binding), all edges gilt, neatly and expertly rebacked. 87, (1, errata) pp. Five chromolithographed plates by J. Bien (1), F. Moras (3), and L.N. Rosenthal. (1) + 4 lithographed plates by J. Bien, one each from photographed plates by J. Bien, two after photographs by William Bell, and one after a photograph by Morgan + numerous text woodcuts. Minor dampstains in outer margins; a very good, crisp copy. This is U.S. Army assistant surgeon, George A. Otis' (1830-81) first surgical case report (Circular No.7) derived from Civil War experiences. As curator of the Army Medical Museum, he had began in 1865 to publish photographs (with an associated text, see: Rutkow GS62 and GS63) of surgical cases and specimens. The present ".monograph is divided into four sections: 'A historical summary'; 'An account of individual cases'; 'A citation of the opinions of surgeons'; and 'A discussion of results'. There are thirty figures, but the strength of this work is in the spectacular plates, five of which are chromolithographs. More important, some of the plates are engravings taken from actual photographs. These are among the earliest examples of such a process in American surgical texts." [Rutkow OR18 - figs. 84 (full-page) and 86 are reproductions of plates]. Kelly & Burrage, pp. 924-925. Orr 1417. Cordasco 60-1350. Not in the other usual medical collections.

Add to basketCondition: Rebound in Grey Buckram. First Edition. Front cover lettered in black. This is Circular No. 7, a report of the treatment of severe leg wounds in the War of the Rebellion. Dr. Otis was Assistant Surgeon and Brevet Lt. Colonel in the US Army. His report was directed by Surgeon General J.K. Barnes. The report is found on pp. 8-87 with sections on historical summary, a discussion of individual cases with listings by type, opinions of surgeons, , and concluding observations. Following the text material are nine full-page plates, five of which are chromolithographs vivid in detail; and four are black and white photographic reproductions. Each is protected by a tissue-guard. Minor damp-stain on margins of several plates. Final plate has a 2" tear at free margin without paper loss. Fore-edge of the title-page is a bit darkened with a small chip missing at the very bottom. Thirty numbered illustrations are found throughout the text. A comprehensive examination of a devastating battlefield injury-the plates are spectacular and revealing of the nature of the injury. Prior to the Civil War, almost all of these kinds of wounds were fatal, usually from infection and blood loss. Early amputation, although ablative, saved some lives. But fatality rate remained very high, as high as 84%. Size: Quarto.
