Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book presents an overview of the state of learning in the 17th century and the problems the author identifies with it. It includes a historical overview of the development of fields such as language, logic, mathematics, natural philosophy, as well as the role of learning in society and religion. The author provides an introduction to each field and discusses the discoveries and controversies that marked the period. Through his analysis, the author concludes that research and development have been hindered by an over-reliance on ancient Greek thought and a neglect of experimentation and empiricism. This book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of learning and the development of scientific thought. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book reflects on the human mind's capacities for understanding and choosing. The author begins with a skeptical look at human reason and will, positing that both are inherently weak and susceptible to contamination by pride and corruption. He then revisits major philosophical systems through history, including Platonism, Aristotelianism, and Cartesianism, along with more modern ideas. The author does not declare one school of thought superior, but rather points out weaknesses in each and acknowledges the persistence of skeptical arguments throughout philosophical thought. Many of the book's ideas engage with the skeptical position that truth is fundamentally elusive, and instead of offering a singular truth, the author suggests many of the insights gained through philosophical inquiry are provisional and modest. Nonetheless, the book's skepticism is not a counsel for despair. Instead, it is offered as a liberating force that can free readers from the trap of dogmatic thinking and encourage them to think for themselves, and embrace uncertainty as a fundamental part of the human condition. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

8vo, pp. [xvi], 295; an attractive copy in contemporary panelled calf, spine nicely gilt, with morocco label (upper joint cracked). Fourth edition: first published in 1699, with a reissue in 1700, and a new edition later that same year. Thomas Baker (1656-1740) was a non-juror whose attitude to learning was coloured by his sense of its inadequacy: he believed that revelation was the only safe guide to salvation. As his biographer in new DNB points out, the book was touched a chord among contemporary readers, as it went through eight editions before 1760. Baker is well known to collectors of old books, too, because after his expulsion from St John's College Cambridge in 1717 (he having refused to take the oath of abjuration), whenever he wrote his name in one of his books, he added 'Coll: Jo: socius ejectus'.

Very good. "In 1699, the Cambridge non-juror, Thomas Baker, had published anonymously his Reflections Upon Learning. Among his critical correspondents was John Woodward, the Professor of Physic at Gresham College. Baker has attempted to criticize the shortcomings of all human learning, in order to emphasize the importance of a whole-hearted belief in revelation." â" J.E. Force, R.H.
